Sulpher Pools
My family live in New Zealand and many of my artworks take inspiration from New Zealand's varied and dramatic landscape and naturally occurring phenomena.
The vibrant colours of Wai-o-tapu and Te Puia's geothermal pools are primarily due to the minerals dissolved within the hot water, which are brought to the surface by volcanic activity. These minerals, like sulfur, arsenic, antimony and mercury, along with trace amounts of gold and silver, cause various vivid colours such as bright yellow, green, pink and orange.
They are so striking that as an artist it is hard not to find the contrast in these astounding colour combinations inspirational. Strangely these minerals all have the same colour altering effects in glass. The colour reactions in both glass and geothermal pools fascinate me.
